I purchased this book after reading the excerpt. It made me laugh and I looked forward to reading more. So here is the sugar before the spice.This book was charming. I liked the plot and I did like the characters (although I wanted them fleshed out a bit more). This was a story the author could have run away with and kept the reader enthralled for hours. However, I found myself scanning pages, looking for key words until I got to the meat of the story. I'm sorry Ms. Michaels, I really am. Chasing Boru through the story wasn't believable. Elizabeth (Betsy) showed great command over the behaviour of her dog at the beginning of the story, and then Boru proceeded to run amuck for the remainder. A few of the scenes where Boru gallumped throughout London, I'd lose track of who was where, and what was happening. I couldn't get a visual in my mind. While Boru's misbehaviour was integral to your plot, sometimes less is more.
My second complaint (and that's all it is because if these issues had been addressed, I would have given a 5 star) was POV switches. Sometimes as many as three or four per page. One paragraph would have the villains POV, the next paragraph would be our hero, then a side thought from the hero's brother, and finally our heroine. At one point I didn't know who was thinking what and had to read the sequence again. This occurred more than once throughout the book. Anything that throws your reader out of the story is not good.
As bad as the above sounds, the 'Dukes Downfall' had redeeming qualities. Ms. Michaels created characters I liked, and wanted to see more of. I wanted the romance between our heroine and hero to be more indepth, because I liked the way they interacted. Teddy is dear to my heart - when he grows up, I hope he gets his own story.

I've read Ms. Michaels'contemporary romances. They're all terrific, so I thought I'd try one of her Regencies. I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of a Cary Grant comedy, only in Regency dress.
Betsy Keaton doesn't want to marry her cousin, Julian, but he wants to marry Betsy because he needs her money to support the title he inherited from her father. Betsy and her grandmother escape to London, where Betsy meets Teddy Earnshaw, the youngest brother of Charles, Duke of Braxton. Teddy decides Betsy is perfect for Charles.
The schemes Teddy devises to get Charles and Betsy together are funny, and Betsy's dog Boru, an Irish wolfhound, wrecks almost all of them. There's a sweet and touching subplot about an orphan boy and his crippled dog that proves Betsy and Charles do belong together after all.
This book is great fun and a great romance. I highly recommend it.
Lord Clymore has just inherited his title but has no money. So, he plans to marry his cousin Elizabeth (Betsy) Keaton. She, on the other hand, does not want to marry anyone, let alone the new Lord Clymore, whom she despises. She arrives in London with a plan and a very large dog.
Charles Earnshaw, duke of Braxton, does not want to marry either and has so far evaded the ladies of the ton by maintaining a facade of simple-mindedness. The dog runs wild and both characters clash, repeatedly.
It just didn't work for me. There were too many scene with the dog running around and creating havroc. Too many jackets and/or dresses being ripped, faces punched and accidental concussions. Slapstick comedy might work on screen but it doesn't translate well in this novel.
This book is a follow-up to Captain Rakehell. I was not impressed with either book, however, this one was especially hard to get through. The previous book wrote the hero to be a single minded man with his ultimate goal being only what knowledge he could acquire. This book seemed to attempt to back peddle that assumption. All in all it was a generic story with cliche characters. I couldn't endear myself to either the hero nor the heroine, therefore, it was quite difficult to enjoy.
Love Lynn Michael's work. Have read most of her books. She is an amazing author, who comes up with new fresh story lines for every book. This is tbe I wish there were more
A brilliant duke, a bluestocking, and a beast of a hound interact magnificently to stir up a frothy romance laced with fun. Add a rapscallion of a brother, a mushroom of a cousin, and some handy footmen to help save the day and it's all quite enjoyable.
Highly recommended for those who love to overset the mannerly attributes of a Regency Romance and for fans of an antic-filled tale.
I really enjoyed this story and the story line was easy to follow. The author drew us in and allowed us to feel the emotions of her characters. The story had intrigue, excitement, humor, a villain, chaos, and romance. I found myself laughing aloud in the middle of the night but then I have a very vivid imagination. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good laugh.
Some of the scenes were funny but when her dog knocks the duke out and she clubs him a second time for some silly misunderstanding and she leaves him out of his mind delirious and feverish with no one in sight to help him? I really don't like Lady Elizabeth Keaton. I don't get the feeling she will ever like him and the Duke professes his love? There really isn't even a wow he his handsome. Or if there was it was so brief I didn't see it. It is consumed much more by her love for her dog that wreaks havocs wherever he goes. She isn't even sorry for her dog knocking him out. During that scene she he leaving him alone she almost goes back because of her "tender heart" but doesn't. She leaves him in the dust delereous seeing double with no one around. Then the writter has the Duke appologized for delaying her getting her dog. I guess the dog is more immportant. I guess her heart isn't that tender. I guess her tender heart only goes to her dog and lost urchins and not to the man she supposedly ends up loving and this was halfway through the book.
