Hot Blooded was so fun! It picks up immediately where Full Blooded ended and covers the span of Jessica's two day rescue mission. I love these kind of narrow time frame stories! The tracker vampires, Eamon and Naomi, arrive right on time and inform Jessica's group that Selene's hideout is in the mountains of Canada. They all head out, but the trip is made more complicated by their unwanted guest: Detective Hart. The Alpha wants to put him to death, but Jessica has taken full responsibility for him hoping that he'll be an asset to the pack. It takes him coming face-to-face with some pretty scary stuff before that happens.

I was highly entertained by Hot Blooded. Even though it took awhile for the plot to really get moving, there's a lot of awesome world building going on. Of course, we have to learn more about Jessica's odd abilities. She has even more than she thought, and they just keep coming. Their discoveries are due in part to all of the bizarre creatures she encounters on the way to Selene's lair. There are so many types of supernatural creatures and I loved meeting all of them! Even though they're scary and evil, but whatever! It was a surprise around every turn for Jessica and her team.

I don't have any real complaints about Hot Blooded, only some minor annoyances with the final battle. You all know those villains who like to talk? Well, Selene isn't exactly one of those. Jessica is the hero who talks too much! Selene is a tough opponent, but not as tough as she thinks. Of course, Jessica overpowers her, otherwise the series would end here, but then she spends so much time debating what to do that she nearly misses her chance to take Selene out for good! There was no good reason for all of the chit-chat except to allow Selene to escape and have more fighting. Just do what you need to do, girl!

Hot Blooded also ends on a cliffhanger. At least this time, something was accomplished, but more trouble is brewing. There's a war between the Northern Pack and the rogue wolves coming up, and witches and wolves are disappearing from the area without a trace. I'm curious how Jessica is going to help with that when she has to get her butt to New Orleans soon, and there's the (not so) small matter of a visit from a demon lord claiming she has a court date in hell. Fun times to be had!

Hot Blooded Jessica McClain Amanda Carlson 9780316205214 Books Reviews

2.5 so I'll round up to 3. Disappointed... This one just didn't work for me, which surprised me since I really enjoyed the previous book. This was just way too predictable with very little plot - just Jessica on a journey to rescue her mate and dealing with the super nats trying to stop her along the way.

This probably could have been enough to be entertaining but I found it irritating as Jessica seems to discover a new power to defeat each obstacle. Lots of oaths sworn for this reason or that. Lots of talking to her wolf in her head, yada yada yada. Dialogue that at times felt robotic.... Overall, it just felt "hokey".

And predictable... so much so, that I skimmed half the book! Doubt this will be much of a spoiler since it is so predictable, but she doesn't reach &rescue her mate until the last 25% of the book, which was a little better but not much. And they still don't get to consummate their mating - but I'm not sure I care.

Jessica's character just seems to have morphed into an unknown all powerful being who one minutes seems to miraculously solve dire situations, but the next minute is making really dumb decisions because she's SO virtuous and determined to save the world, including Ray! What was that all about!? I mean, pleeease, figure out a way to contain him for a bit and go do your big rescue mission! I mean don't get me wrong, I kinda liked the jerk Ray, and I still liked Tyler and Danny, Naomi was a nice addition, and I liked Rourke, what little we saw of him, but I feel I really wasted my time on this installment. And unfortunately, I have a strong feeling the next might be more of the same since a couple of characters go missing at the end of this book, so I suspect yet another rescue mission...sigh.

Maybe, just maybe it will be a little better since she'll hopefully advance her relationship with Rourke and have him by her side this time, as well as the others. And there's still the guard duty she has to perform for the Vamp Queen. But I'll definitely wait for reviews to decide if I'll read the next.
First of all, I have to say that Jessica McClain is one of the best characters ever created. She is strong, smart and has powers like no other. I devoured the books, I literally could not stop!
Second book continues exactly where the first one stops. There is no gap in the story and I love it. So unless you plan to stop reading the series, we can't really talk about cliffhangers. However, I must have been frustrating reading the books when they were coming out one by one. Good news is that they are all out now and you can just keep on reading.
Jessica is getting a good grip on her powers in this book. Her character is developing as is the world. The supporting characters are all there and we get to know them better and love them.
I have to warn you that there is violence and it is very adequately described. Jessica fights against all odds and it is amazing to read. There is so much action, it was mind blowing. This book was even better than the first one. At this point I decided to read the prequel.
Series reading order is Blooded (Jessica McClain, #0.5), Full Blooded (Jessica McClain, #1), Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain, #2), Cold Blooded (Jessica McClain, #3), Red Blooded (Jessica McClain, #4), and Pure Blooded (Jessica McClain, #5).
